The medical name for bone spurs is osteophyte. Bone spurs are simply bony growths that are formed on the normal bones. It is just extra bone that grows out of another bone. The most common places that people will get bone spurs are usually the hands, feet, spine, hips, shoulders, and the knees. If the bone spur rubs on other bones, tendons, ligaments, or nerves, there can be damage and pain caused by the wear and tear from the spur.
When the body tries to repair itself there will be extra bone that is built and this leads to the formation of bone spurs. If there is pressure, rubbing, or stress that continues over a long period of time, the body will create extra bone to begin the repairs. Dancing and running can cause stress on the feet that can lead to the formation of bone spurs. Obesity can also cause pressure on the feet. Something as simple as shoes that don’t fit properly can cause someone to develop bone spurs.
Most people that have bone spurs never develop any symptoms. If the spur is in a place that it is causing a muscle or tendon to rub or if it causes a tissue break down, there can be signs of swelling, pain, and tearing. If the spur is located in the foot, there may be calluses and corns that form in the area of the bone spur. Most bone spurs can be diagnosed by having an X-ray done. There isn’t usually any treatment unless the spur is causing pain or damaging tissue. If treatment is needed, it will normally consist of rest, ice, stretching, and anti-inflammatory medications. Sometimes physical therapy will be prescribed. The physical therapy is usually around four weeks long and can teach you how to do the treatments at home.
