Avian flu, or as it is called by many, the Bird Flu, is a influenza that is contributed to certain birds. In the past five years, there have been strains of it that have reached even the United States; in some cases it has proven to be fatal, especially with individuals dealing with preexisting health conditions and particularly the elderly and small children. What are the symptoms of avian flu? Such symptoms includes factors as: a dry cough, difficulty in breathing, a fever more than 100.4 degrees, headaches, malaise, muscle aches, runny nose, and sore throat.
There can also be possible complications from Avian flu, one of which is pneumonia. In some patients this condition can be fatal, depending on their age or any history of a preexisting health condition. If a person feels that they have the above symptoms, then they need to see a doctor right away. But the patient may want to use precautions before they see their doctor. For example, they may want to call beforehand so that the physician can take precautions to protect themselves as well as other patients; the Avian flu is very contagious. Once the doctor and his other patients are protected, the following tests will be conducted: auscultation, or the test to detect any abnormal breath sounds; chest X-rays; nasopharnygeal culture, or the examination of the throat and the nose; the physician may also examine the patient’s heart, liver, and kidneys as well.
What is the treatment of avian flu? That can depend on the kind of Avian flu involved. There are several kinds and they can have various symptoms, which can vary from person to person. So one physician will be able to determine what particular type of bird flu the patient may have. There appears to be no known cure to the above influenza at present, but people are strongly urged to stay away from areas where there are live-bird markets that may have an avian flu epedemic. It may even be helpful to wear special protective clothing as well as breathing masks if people in that particular region believe they can easily contract the avian flu. From the Web
