Varicose vein is a common health problem. These veins are under the skin of the legs and contain one way valves to ensure that the blood flows towards the heart. Failure of these valves allows the blood back towards the legs and results in overload of pressure when standing. The excess pressure leads to widening, bulging and twisted of the veins so they do not close and blood flow back into the leg and causes the varicose veins to develop.
According to Ayurveda, varicose veins are Siraja granthi. The blood veins get enlarged and losses its elasticity due to long walk, longer standing and bearing weight. Especially in the calf the lower limb tired in resending the blood upwards so the veins get swollen, dilated, lose their ability to shrink, resulting into varicose veins. The problem of varicose veins occurs in people who have standing job or keep standing for a long period of time like Vehicle pullers, drivers, teachers, guards, and watchman.
Symptoms of Varicose veins
Varicose veins are highly visible and often associated with symptoms such as feeling of tiredness, heaviness, pain and achiness in the legs and thigh. In some cases, one can develop swelling and discoloration and in severe cases, the veins bleed significantly and form ulcer.
Causes of Varicose veins
The actual cause of the varicose veins is not specified because in some instance weakness of valves in the veins may prevent the backward flow of blood or other may cause pooling of the blood. Sometime varicose veins are caused by the diseases such as Phlebitis or congenital abnormalities of the veins.
According to Ayurveda Varicose vein occurs due to intake of Abhisyand food such as curd, fried foods, and non veg and junk foods, aerated drinks and much more.
Pregnancy, menopause, aging, standing over a long period of time, obesity and heredity are some of the potential causes for varicose veins.
Diagnosis of varicose vein
Varicose veins are typically diagnosed on the basis of their appearances so the physical examination and medical history are the important tools in diagnosing the varicose veins. During the physical examination doctors generally check feet and legs for varicose veins. On the other hand medical history includes questions like any serious leg injury or family has a history of varicose veins.
Sometime doctors do an ultrasound by using high-frequency sound waves and check how the blood is flowing in the veins. In some cases Venogram is recommended and during this test, a special dye is injected into the legs and taken the X-ray. It gives better view of blood flow in the veins.
Natural and Ayurvedic Treatment
In medical, surgery is often used to remove the damaged veins by tying or blocking and thus allow secondary channels of circulation to take the load. However this is not permanent cure because of the possibility of recurrence. Given below are some of the natural and Ayurvedic remedies mentioned, which can helps to lessen the effect of varicose veins.
Lifestyle change, dietary change or herbal treatment is recommended to strengthening the walls of the veins and relieve symptoms of aching, heaviness and swelling in the legs and ankles. Eating whole food like wheat and millet with fresh fruits diet including aamla and citrus family fruits is always recommended. Eating more garlic, onion, ginger and pineapple helps in dispersing the protein because of protein deposition skin get lumpy and hard near varicose veins.
Regular exercise stimulate blood circulation, improves muscle tone. Similarly brisk walking and swimming, bicycle riding are considered to be the best therapy. Regular Yoga such as Sarvang aasana, Halaasana and Pawanmuktaasana also helps to enhance blood circulation. Regular massage will alleviate the discomfort due to varicose vein – the massage should be done under the supervision of expert. Use hot and cold baths alternatively.
Do not wear tight cloths and avoid using high heel footwear. Raising the foot from the bed up to six inches or sometime use wooden block under the feet, it helps gravity to make back pressure on the veins. Do not stand in the same position for a longer period. Stretch and exercise legs as much as possible it will increase blood circulation and reduce the pressure on the legs.
While sitting try not to cross your legs at the knees, quit smoking and if you are pregnant do not use contraceptive pills and sleep on the left side as it will increase the blood circulation in the veins.
